Computer virus: everything you need to know

In 1949, Hungarian-American scientist Johnvon Neumann theorised the possibility of writing a self-replicating program, which later came to be known as a computer virus.

A computer virus is a type of malicious software program ("malware") that, when executed, replicates itself by modifying other computer programs and inserting its own code. Viruses can cause programs to opperate incorrectly or corrupt a computer's momory.

Virus writers use social engineering deceptions and exploit detailed knowledge of security vulnerabilities to initially infect systems and to spread the virus. Most virus target systems running Microsoft Windows, using varieties of mechanism to infect new hosts and often using very complex anti-detection strategies to avoid been detected by antivirus softwares.

Initially, viruses were designed and tested in university computer labs. The first virus that went "out in the wide" (outside of the lab computer) in which it was designed -- was Elk Cloner which was written by Richard Skrenta, a school student in the US. Viruses written during the period were spread through floppy disks and hence never caused a major security threat, but nowadays virus can be spread through the internet, email attachments, Bluetooth transfer..

Reasons for writing a Virus software
Virus are written for various reasons e.g,
Profit making (ransom ware) Desire to send a political message Personal reasons To show that vulnerability exist in a software and lots more.

Types of Computer virus
There are various type of computer viruses depending on the programmer's aim and mode of activation programmed for the virus

1. Boot sector virus: this virus types targets the boot sector of a hard drive and crucially effects the boot proccess.

2. Network Virus: uniquely created to quickly spread throughout the local area network and generally across the Internet as well. Typically moves within shared resources like drives and folders.

3. File Infection Virus: coded viruses that attach themselves to .exe files; compressed files such as .zip or drive files.

4. Multipartite Virus: cross between a file virus and a boot sector virus.

5. E-mail Virus: generally this is a macro virus which multiplies by sending itself to other contacts in your address book,in hopes they'll activate the virus as well on order for it yo keep spreading.

6. Macro Virus: infects program files that use macros in the program itself, such as word processors.

7. Logic Bomb: This is the type of Computer Virus that waits for certain conditions fulfilled before it can be activated. It can be a certain period of the year or particular activities coded or embedded in the Software. By implication the Virus can be there for a very long time pending on when such activities are carried out.

Examples of computer virus
There are different types and here are few of it:

>> OSX/RSPlug Trojan
>> Netsky and Sasser
>> Storm worm
>> The Concept virus
>> MyDoom
>> Blaster Worm
>> SQL Slammer
>> Code Red/Code Red II
>> Nimda
>> ILOVEYOU

Prevention against computer viruses

Today, many "worm" viruses travel the internet actively seeking for vulnerable computers. This means that your computer can become infected just by connecting to the internet. Although new viruses are being created all the time, there are some steps that you can take to protect your computer.

• Your most important defense is installing and regularly updating virus protection software (anti-virus). Although anti-virus software is criticial, it is no longer enough to provide maximum protection alone. You should also run operating system updates regularly.

  • Windows users can install critical updates by opening the Control Panel, clicking System and Security and finally Windows Update.
  • Macintosh users can install updates by clicking on the Apple menu and choosing Software Update.

• Avoid opening of emails with attachments if the message looks suspicious even if they are from friends or close relatives.
• Avoid downloading files from strangers.
• Be cautious when downloading files from the internet.
• LoadedBlog suggest you visit Microsoft security update page

What you should do if your PC have virus

The type of virus you have or the method it used to infect your computer is not as important as removing it and preventing further infection.
To remove the virus yourself, download and run a very effective anti-virus.

Computer Viruses is not something to joke with. It is better to know the causes and take precaution than to be caught off guard. Most importantly a reliable anti- Virus Software should be installed in the Computer and be updated as at when due.
